Claude in Chrome

Claude in Chrome is an official browser extension that lets Claude act as an AI agent directly inside Google Chrome. It opens as a persistent side panel while you browse, allowing Claude to read page content, click buttons, fill forms, and navigate websites on your behalf — not just answer questions about them. The extension works by taking screenshots of your active tab and interacting with the page's DOM (the underlying structure of a webpage). You can ask Claude to handle tasks across multiple tabs, schedule recurring browser jobs, record a workflow once and have Claude repeat it, and even connect it to Claude Desktop or Claude Code for end-to-end software development workflows. Browser use is a beta feature with real security implications. Claude can see everything visible on your screen when the panel is open, and malicious content on web pages could potentially influence Claude's actions (prompt injection). Anthropic provides two operating modes — 'Ask before acting' and 'Act without asking' — and recommends the safer, approval-based mode for most tasks, especially on unfamiliar or untrusted websites.

When you’d use it

  • Research and summarization across multiple tabsA user wants to compare pricing and features across five competitor websites without manually opening each tab and copying data. Claude opens the tabs, reads the content, and synthesizes a comparison table in the side panel.
  • Email drafting and inbox triageA busy professional asks Claude to scan their Gmail inbox from the past 24 hours, categorize messages as 'Action Required,' 'FYI,' or 'Ignore,' and draft polite decline responses for vendor pitches — saving them from reading every message individually.
  • Cross-platform meeting schedulingA team lead asks Claude to check availability across multiple shared calendars (e.g., Google Calendar and Outlook), identify overlapping free slots, and draft a scheduling email with proposed meeting times for everyone.
  • Automated recurring data extractionAn analyst needs to pull weekly metrics from a gated internal portal. They record the workflow once using the 'Teach Claude' feature, then schedule it to run automatically every Monday morning without any further manual steps.
  • Software development build-test-verify loopA developer uses Claude Code in their terminal to build a feature, then triggers Claude in Chrome to load the staging site, run test cases, read console errors and network requests from the DOM, and return a diagnostic report — all without switching windows or opening browser developer tools manually.

What changed recently

  • 2025-08Anthropic released the initial version of Claude for Chrome to a limited testing cohort, introducing basic agentic browser control.
  • 2025-09-16Added support for long-running workflows (Claude can operate across dormant tabs) and introduced slash commands, allowing users to save proven prompts as reusable shortcuts.
  • 2025-10-15Default underlying model updated to Haiku 4.5, optimizing for speed and token efficiency during real-time browsing tasks.
  • 2026-02-11After three months of testing, Claude in Chrome entered open beta for all Max plan subscribers. Anthropic announced major safety improvements: red-teaming mitigations reduced browser-specific prompt injection attack success rate from 35.7% to 0% on a challenge test set.
