Claude in Excel

Claude in Excel is an official Anthropic add-in that integrates Claude directly into Microsoft Excel through a sidebar interface. It lets you interact with your spreadsheets using natural language — asking Claude to read cell values, trace formula dependencies, clean and transform data, build models, create pivot tables, apply conditional formatting, and more — without leaving Excel. The add-in reads live spreadsheet data and writes changes directly back to your workbook. Claude highlights every cell it modifies, provides explanatory comments, and logs actions in a dedicated 'Claude Log' tab so you can review or reverse changes. It can also share context across other open Microsoft 365 apps (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook), enabling cross-app workflows such as generating a PowerPoint deck from data calculated in Excel. Access requires a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise). Enterprise users get additional capabilities including audit telemetry routed to their own OpenTelemetry collector. The add-in does not support VBA macros or perpetual Excel licenses (e.g., Excel 2016/2019); it requires Microsoft 365 subscription builds.

When you’d use it

  • Formula Debugging and Error DiagnosisA junior analyst inherits a workbook full of #REF!, #VALUE!, or circular reference errors. They highlight the broken cell, ask Claude to explain the issue, and Claude traces the cell's precedents across multiple sheets, explains the original logic in plain English, and proposes a corrected formula that preserves existing dependencies.
  • Data Cleaning and StandardizationA data analyst receives a messy CRM export with duplicate rows, inconsistent region names, missing values, and mixed date formats. Claude removes duplicates, standardizes text fields, fills missing values using inferred logic (e.g., median price), and converts data types — all via a single natural-language prompt without requiring TEXTSPLIT, Power Query, or manual scripting.
  • Pivot Table and Dashboard CreationA financial analyst has thousands of rows of raw transaction data and needs a presentation-ready summary. Claude creates a pivot table grouped by department and category, applies conditional formatting to highlight budget variances, and formats headers and totals to match reporting standards.
  • Financial Modeling and Scenario AnalysisA controller needs a 5-year operating budget with best-case, base-case, and worst-case scenarios. Claude builds separate sheets for each scenario, writes interconnected formulas (not hard-coded values), generates a sensitivity table showing net income across varying cost and growth assumptions, and color-codes assumption cells versus calculated results for audit clarity.
  • Cross-App Workflow: Excel to PowerPointAn analyst finishes a financial model in Excel and needs a board deck. With both Excel and PowerPoint open, they prompt Claude in the Excel sidebar to calculate key metrics and then generate a slide deck in PowerPoint that directly references and visualizes those results — eliminating manual copy-paste between applications.
