Conversation management

Conversation management on claude.ai is the collection of tools that let you organize, search, share, and maintain your chat history with Claude across sessions. At its simplest, this means renaming or deleting individual chats. More advanced features include grouping related chats into Projects with shared knowledge bases, searching past conversations by natural language, and enabling a memory synthesis system that automatically summarizes your preferences and prior work so Claude can reference them in future sessions. Projects act as self-contained workspaces: each project has its own document library (up to 200K tokens of context), its own chat history, and its own dedicated memory summary. This means context from a marketing project stays separate from context from a coding project, reducing confusion. Projects are available on paid plans (Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise). Memory synthesis runs automatically in the background and builds a rolling summary of your working style, preferences, and key facts. This summary is updated roughly every 24 hours and is injected into new conversations so you do not have to repeat yourself. Chat search lets paid-plan users retrieve specific information from older conversations using plain-language prompts. Incognito chats (signaled by a ghost icon) are excluded from both memory and chat history, useful for sensitive or exploratory work.

When you’d use it

  • Keeping a tidy chat historyA user accumulates dozens of one-off chats over a month. They rename the useful ones with descriptive titles like 'Python Debugging – April 2026' and delete the rest to keep the sidebar navigable.
  • Team knowledge base for a shared projectA marketing team creates a Project, uploads brand guidelines and past campaign reports, and invites colleagues. Every team member can now chat with Claude using that shared context without re-uploading documents or repeating background information.
  • Long-running research across many sessionsA researcher working on a paper over several weeks enables memory and uses chat search to pull specific data points or arguments from conversations that happened days earlier, maintaining continuity without manual copy-pasting.
  • Exploring sensitive ideas privatelyA founder wants to brainstorm an acquisition strategy without it being stored in their history or influencing future sessions. They use incognito chat so the conversation is excluded from memory and does not appear in their chat list.
  • Persistent formatting and tone preferencesA technical writer tells Claude once to always include an executive summary before detailed explanations and to use sentence case for headings. Memory stores this preference and applies it automatically in all future chats.

What changed recently

  • 2026-03-16Memory and chat search features reached general availability across web, Claude Desktop, and Claude Mobile. Memory now maintains a separate summary per Project, keeping project context isolated from global memory and other projects. Chat search allows paid-plan users to retrieve content from past conversations using natural language prompts, with citation links back to the original sessions.
  • 2026-04-24Claude Cowork introduced a continuous, persistent conversation that syncs automatically across mobile and desktop. Users can assign Claude a task, leave, and return to completed work, representing a shift beyond the traditional discrete-session chat model.
  • 2026-01-06Context management updates released for the Claude Developer Platform (API). Claude Sonnet 4.5 gained built-in context awareness, tracking available tokens throughout a conversation to manage context more effectively. Beta support added for tool result clearing and thinking block clearing to help developers handle long-running agent tasks without hitting context limits.
