Creating Word documents (docx)

Claude can create downloadable Microsoft Word (.docx) files directly within claude.ai, the Claude Desktop app, and Claude Mobile apps. It does this by writing and executing code (typically Python using libraries like python-docx) inside a private sandbox environment that is built into the product. You describe the document you want in plain language, Claude generates the file programmatically, and a download button appears in the chat so you can save the file to your device or send it to Google Drive. The feature goes beyond simply outputting text: Claude can apply proper heading hierarchies, insert tables, add a table of contents, calculate and embed data from uploaded spreadsheets, and maintain consistent styling throughout the document. Because the file is generated as real Office Open XML (the format underlying .docx), it opens natively in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and compatible editors and remains fully editable after download. File creation is part of the broader 'Agent Skills' capability introduced in late 2025 and draws from the same usage limits as your plan. Files are available for download throughout the conversation but are not persistently stored or dynamically linked to external data sources.

When you’d use it

  • Meeting minutes and action item summariesA project manager pastes a raw meeting transcript into Claude and asks for a structured Word document with an executive summary, an action-items table (owner, task, due date), key decisions, and next steps — formatted with heading styles and a confidential footer.
  • Business proposals and RFP responsesA sales team member provides a brief about a prospect and asks Claude to generate a multi-section Word proposal with a title page, executive summary, problem statement, solution overview, and a dynamic pricing table — ready to send without any manual copy-pasting.
  • Data-driven reports from spreadsheetsAn analyst uploads a CSV of quarterly sales figures by region and product line, then asks Claude to produce a Word report with auto-calculated metrics, styled tables with alternating row colors, a regional breakdown, year-over-year growth percentages, recommendations, and a hyperlinked table of contents.
  • Compliance and policy templatesAn HR or legal team member asks Claude to generate a compliance policy document pre-populated with company metadata, structured required sections, and placeholder fields for jurisdiction-specific language — saving hours of template setup.
  • Contract redlining and tracked-changes reviewA lawyer uploads an existing vendor agreement (.docx) and asks Claude to apply specific edits — such as capping liability at a set amount — using tracked changes in the OOXML structure and adding explanatory margin comments for the legal team to review before accepting.

What changed recently

  • 2025-10Agent Skills (beta, skills-2025-10-02) launched as a way to extend Claude's capabilities via organized folders of instructions and scripts. The initial release included Anthropic-managed Skills for Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), PowerPoint (.pptx), and PDF files, enabling programmatic document creation via the API.
  • 2025-11-19File creation became generally available for paid plans (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise) on claude.ai. The announcement confirmed support for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF outputs, with the ability to download files or save them to Google Drive.
  • 2025-12-18Agent Skills were published as an open standard for cross-platform portability, and the underlying Office document manipulation routines (including the .docx handler) were open-sourced in the public anthropics/skills GitHub repository, allowing enterprise developers to audit the Python logic Claude uses to generate and modify Word files.
  • 2026-04-22Anthropic's support article 'Create and edit files with Claude' was updated, confirming that file creation is available on claude.ai, Claude Desktop, and Claude Mobile (iOS and Android), with a 30 MB per-file limit for both uploads and downloads, and that file creation draws from the same usage limits as a user's plan.
