Deep research (Research feature)

The Research feature on Claude.ai is an agentic capability that conducts multi-step, web-grounded investigations on your behalf. Instead of running a single search and returning an answer, it breaks your question into smaller sub-tasks, executes multiple sequential searches that build on one another, evaluates sources, and synthesizes findings into a comprehensive, cited report. The process typically takes five to fifteen minutes, though complex investigations can run up to forty-five minutes. Research differs from standard web search in scope and depth. A normal web search executes one or two queries and replies immediately. Research treats your prompt like a brief, autonomously deciding what to investigate next, exploring different angles, and resolving contradictions before writing up its conclusions. The result is a longer, structured document with citations linking directly to original sources. When Google Workspace or other integrations are connected, Research can also search across your Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs alongside the open web, letting it combine internal context (emails, meeting notes, design docs) with real-time external information in a single report.

When you’d use it

  • Competitive analysis for product teamsA product manager needs a structured comparison of competing tools before a strategy meeting. Research searches official documentation, pricing pages, press releases, and review sites, then produces a formatted matrix with citations that the team can verify.
  • Client meeting preparation for sales teamsA sales rep connects Google Workspace and asks Claude to combine their email history with a prospect, upcoming calendar invites, and the latest news about the prospect's company into a pre-meeting briefing document, saving hours of manual preparation.
  • Academic study plan creationA university student asks Research to review their uploaded course notes alongside recent academic papers and expert explanations found on the web, then produce a personalized study plan with learning resources and citations.
  • Regulatory and compliance synthesis for engineering teamsAn engineering team needs to understand FDA requirements for AI-assisted medical devices. Research pulls recent regulatory guidance, cross-references NIST security frameworks, and surfaces recent compliance case studies, then combines that with the team's internal design documents to produce an implementation roadmap.
  • Technical integration guide for developersA developer integrating a new third-party API asks Research to consolidate the official documentation, relevant GitHub readmes, and developer forum threads into a single structured guide tailored to their existing software stack.

What changed recently

  • 2025-10-31Research feature launched. Claude can conduct in-depth research by searching across the web and Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs) to deliver comprehensive cited reports. Initially available to Max, Team, and Enterprise plans in the US, Japan, and Brazil.
  • 2026-03-16Extended thinking confirmed to activate automatically when Research is enabled, allowing Claude to reason through contradictions and synthesize complex findings more rigorously.
  • 2026-Q1Advanced Research mode launched in beta on Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Research can now run for up to 45 minutes on complex investigations (most still complete in 5–15 minutes), search across connected third-party Integrations in addition to Google Workspace and the web, and conduct deeper investigations across hundreds of internal and external sources. Pro plan support announced as coming soon.
