Image generation (Imagine)
Image generation in Claude refers to the creation of interactive, code-rendered visuals—diagrams, charts, and dynamic UI components—produced inline within the claude.ai chat interface. Claude does not generate raster images (JPEG, PNG, etc.) using a diffusion model like DALL-E or Midjourney. Instead, it writes and renders HTML, SVG, and JavaScript code that produces interactive, manipulable visualizations directly in the conversation. These visuals respond to user input, support sliders, toggles, and click events, and blend seamlessly with text-based answers.
The feature originated as a limited experimental preview called 'Imagine with Claude,' which was briefly available exclusively to Max subscribers during the Claude Sonnet 4 launch window in fall 2025. Following that test period, Anthropic refined the concept and relaunched it under the broader 'Interactive Visuals' framework on March 12, 2026, integrating dynamic HTML/SVG chart rendering directly into chat responses. As of April 2026, the capability is available across all paid plans—Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise—within standard claude.ai chat interfaces.
Because the visuals are an emergent product of Claude's coding and reasoning capabilities, there is no separate settings toggle to enable them. Users simply describe what they want to see using spatial or analytical language, and Claude generates the interactive output inline. The visuals are inherently temporary pedagogical aids tied to the conversation context; they do not automatically persist as standalone files unless explicitly converted to an Artifact.
When you’d use it
- ◆Educational Concept Diagrams — A student asks Claude to explain the water cycle and requests a visual diagram to accompany the explanation. Claude renders an interactive SVG showing evaporation, condensation, and precipitation stages with clickable labels.
- ◆Interactive Financial Modeling — A financial analyst inputs loan parameters—principal, interest rate, and term—and asks for a compound interest chart with adjustable sliders. Claude generates an HTML/JS chart where changing a slider instantly updates the curve.
- ◆Historical Event Timelines — A teacher asks Claude to create an interactive timeline of major World War II events. Claude produces a scrollable, clickable SVG timeline with event descriptions that appear when a user clicks each point.
- ◆Software UI Prototyping — A product manager describes a dashboard layout and asks Claude to mock it up interactively. Claude generates a functional HTML prototype with buttons, panels, and sample data that can be clicked and explored within the chat.
- ◆Data Exploration Dashboard — A business analyst pastes a decade of quarterly revenue figures and asks for a chart that lets them toggle between annual totals and quarterly breakdowns. Claude produces an inline interactive chart with toggle buttons and hover tooltips.
What changed recently
- ◆2025-11 — Feature first previewed as 'Imagine with Claude'—a limited, time-restricted experiment available exclusively to Max subscribers during the Claude Sonnet 4 launch window. Not a permanent product release.
- ◆2026-03-12 — Anthropic relaunched the concept as 'Interactive Visuals,' bringing dynamic inline HTML/SVG chart rendering to standard chat responses and retiring the 'Imagine' branding.
- ◆2026-04-22 — Interactive Visuals became available across all paid plans—Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise—within claude.ai chat interfaces.
