MCP connector: Gmail
The Gmail MCP connector is a first-party integration available on claude.ai that connects Claude's reasoning capabilities directly to a user's Gmail inbox. It allows Claude to search email threads, read messages, extract metadata, and create draft replies — all from within a conversation, without requiring the user to switch to their Gmail interface. The connector operates through a secure OAuth 2.0 authorization flow, meaning Claude only accesses your inbox after you explicitly grant permission, and only within defined read and draft-creation boundaries.
Under the hood, this connector exposes a limited set of Gmail API tools to Claude: searching threads by query, retrieving thread content, and creating draft messages. Notably, Claude cannot send emails, delete messages, apply labels, or move messages to folders through this connector. These restrictions are intentional design choices to prioritize data safety and prevent unintended inbox modifications.
The Gmail connector is part of Anthropic's broader MCP (Model Context Protocol) connector ecosystem on claude.ai, which also includes integrations for other Google Workspace tools like Google Drive and Calendar, as well as third-party services. MCP connectors differ from custom-built MCP servers in that they are pre-configured, managed by Anthropic, and require no developer setup — users simply authenticate and start using them.
When you’d use it
- ◆Inbox Triage — A busy professional asks Claude to summarize all unread emails from their manager or a key client received in the last 48 hours, getting a quick digest without opening Gmail.
- ◆Project Thread Summarization — A project manager needs to catch up on a long email chain about a product launch. They ask Claude to find all threads with a specific subject line and produce a structured summary of decisions made and open questions.
- ◆Draft Reply Generation — After reading an email from a vendor about a contract renewal, a user asks Claude to draft a polite decline referencing budget constraints. Claude creates the draft directly in Gmail for the user to review and send.
- ◆Meeting Prep from Email Context — Before a client call, a user asks Claude to pull all recent emails from that client's domain and extract key concerns, requests, and commitments mentioned — giving them a quick briefing without manual searching.
- ◆Action Item Extraction — A team lead asks Claude to read through a set of project update emails and compile a list of all action items mentioned, along with who was assigned and any stated deadlines.
What changed recently
- ◆2025-01 — MCP (Model Context Protocol) connectors, including Google Workspace integrations covering Gmail, became available on claude.ai for Pro and higher plans, as part of Anthropic's rollout of first-party connectors.
- ◆2025-05 — Documentation confirmed that the Gmail connector's operational scope is intentionally limited to read and draft-creation functions only. Destructive or modifying operations (trash, label, move) are explicitly excluded from the connector's tool surface, even though the underlying Google API supports them.
