MCP connector: Google Drive
The Google Drive MCP connector is a built-in integration that lets Claude securely read, search, and interact with files stored in your Google Drive without leaving the conversation. Once you authenticate with your Google account, Claude can retrieve Google Docs, Sheets, and PDFs, extract their text content, and use that information to answer questions, generate analysis, or produce new documents. It is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for connecting AI models to external data sources.
The connector works within your existing Google permissions — Claude can only access files you already have access to in Drive. Text content is extracted and loaded into Claude's context window for the duration of the conversation. Images embedded in documents are not processed. Files linked to private Projects stay in sync with Drive automatically, so Claude always sees the latest version.
Saving Claude-generated files back to Drive is possible but requires code execution and file creation to be enabled. On Enterprise plans, an additional Google Drive Cataloging feature allows Claude to index an organization's Drive corpus and surface relevant documents proactively during conversations. For Team and Enterprise accounts, an organization Owner or Primary Owner must enable connectors at the account level before individual users can authenticate.
When you’d use it
- ◆Quick Document Summarization — A user needs a summary of a long internal report stored in Google Drive. They paste the file URL into chat and ask Claude to summarize it, getting a concise overview without manually reading the entire document.
- ◆Vendor or Budget Comparison — A finance analyst shares links to a budget spreadsheet and multiple vendor proposal documents. Claude reads all files and produces a side-by-side comparison with a recommended choice, citing figures from each source document.
- ◆Live Project Context in a Project — A product team links their live roadmap Google Sheet to a private Claude Project. Every time someone asks Claude about priorities or timelines, it reads the current state of the sheet without anyone re-uploading the file.
- ◆Cross-Document Discrepancy Detection — A legal or compliance team feeds Claude multiple policy documents, a contract draft, and engineering constraints. Claude identifies contradictory clauses or requirements across the files and flags them for human review.
- ◆Automated Report Generation and Saving — A manager asks Claude to read the latest sales data from a Google Sheet, synthesize it with a market trends document, write an executive summary, and save the result as a new Google Doc in a designated Reports folder. This requires code execution and file creation to be enabled.
