Memory & Search past chats

Memory & Search past chats is a two-component feature on claude.ai that gives Claude awareness of your conversational history across sessions. The first component, Chat Search, lets you explicitly prompt Claude to scan your past conversations and retrieve relevant information using transparent tool calls — Claude shows you what it's searching and cites the original chats it finds. The second component, Memory, automatically summarizes your conversations and synthesizes key insights across your chat history, updating roughly every 24 hours, so each new standalone conversation starts with relevant context already loaded. Together these features transform Claude from a stateless chatbot (where every new conversation starts blank) into a collaborator that accumulates understanding over time. Rather than injecting your entire chat history into every session — which would exhaust context limits — Claude uses a retrieval approach: it only pulls historical data when it's relevant or when you ask for it. Both components include privacy controls. You can pause memory (Claude keeps existing memory but stops forming new memories), reset memory entirely (permanent and irreversible), or use Incognito mode for temporary conversations that are never saved to history or memory. Enterprise plan owners can enable or disable the feature organization-wide, with individual users managing their own settings within those boundaries.

When you’d use it

  • Resuming a multi-week project without re-explaining contextA freelance consultant works on a client deliverable across several sessions spread over two weeks. Each new session previously required a long recap prompt to re-establish what had been decided. With memory and chat search, Claude automatically carries forward key decisions and the user can ask it to retrieve specific earlier drafts or conclusions without manually scrolling history.
  • Recovering a specific artifact from a past conversationA developer wrote a custom Python script with Claude three weeks ago but can't find it in their local files. They ask Claude to search past chats for the script by describing what it did. Claude retrieves the relevant session and surfaces the code with a citation link back to the original chat.
  • Decision provenance for engineering teamsA software architect needs to explain to a new team member why the team chose one database over another six months ago. Rather than digging through Confluence or Slack, they ask Claude to search past chats for the database selection discussion and retrieve the reasoning that was documented at the time.
  • Cross-session synthesis for research or writing projectsA researcher has discussed different aspects of a topic in five separate Claude sessions over a month. They ask Claude to search all those conversations and synthesize the key arguments, sources, and open questions into a single structured summary, saving hours of manual review.
  • Project-scoped team knowledge sharingA four-person product team on the Team plan uses a shared Claude Project for a feature launch. Individual team members have separate chats within the project, but Claude's project memory means any team member starting a new chat in that project automatically gets context about architectural decisions, deadlines, and design choices discussed by other members — without needing to share notes manually.

What changed recently

  • 2025-08-11Chat Search launched for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users. The rollout introduced an explicit, tool-driven retrieval model rather than automatically injecting historical summaries into every session — a deliberate design choice prioritizing transparency and user control.
  • 2025-09-11Memory (auto-synthesis from chat history) began rolling out to Team and Enterprise plan users. Anthropic conducted safety testing across sensitive wellbeing-related topics and edge cases before this rollout.
  • 2026-03-16Memory from chat history became available to all Claude users including Free plan users. Memory import (experimental) launched, allowing users to paste exported memory from other AI services into Claude. Incognito chats became available to all users on all plans.
  • 2026-05Memory capabilities confirmed available on Max and Pro plans. Pro plan rollout described as gradual as of late May 2026. Project-scoped memory confirmed as a distinct memory space separate from general chat memory.
